We have developed several tools tracking and monitoring athlete wellbeing. Below we will outline how we do this in Arc and some of the reasonings behind our decisions.

Morning Check-in

Below is a list of the wellness specific questions asked in the wellness survey:

  • Sleep Duration

  • Sleep Quality (0 to 10, where 0 is Severely Disturbed, and 10 is Excellent)

  • General Soreness (0 to 10, where 0 is No Soreness and 10 is Severe)

  • Stress (0 to 10, where 0 is No Stress and 10 is Highly Stressed)

  • Fatigue (0 to 10, where 0 is No Fatigue and 10 is Total Fatigue and exhaustion)

  • Mood (0 to 10, where 0 is Low and 10 is Fantastic)

  • Motivation (0 to 10, where 0 is No Motivation and 10 is Very Motivated)

  • Illnesses and Injuries

  • Menstruation (if enabled)

  • General Comments (if enabled)

The questions and wordhooks are based on what was established as the key pillars for athlete wellbeing with a focus on stress and recovery on the basis of Kellmann and Kolling's (2018) work.

We recommend pushing this to athletes on training days, or 3-5 days a week. This ensures we are able to accurately detect fluctuations in the numbers that athletes are reporting.

Flagging

An athletes's wellness is "flagged" by comparing their current wellbeing score against their 7-day average. We also take into account the athlete's standard-deviation, to only flag when an athlete falls outside of their typical range. When an athlete's wellbeing score is better than their personal average, their wellbeing scores will be highlighted green, whereas when they are scoring poorly, their score will be highlighted red:

Flags for an athletes wellbeing can be easily discovered in one of two ways:

  • Viewing the Overview Dashboard in Arc

  • Configuring and receiving Wellbeing Alerts

Wellbeing Alerts for negative scores will send email alerts to assigned users. Read more about configuring Morning Check-in Alerts.

Data Visualisation

Athletes are able to access their own wellbeing scores in the Arc Web application as well as the Arc Mobile application.

Staff can access individual and team wellbeing data from the Arc Web app via several locations:

Overview Dashboard

Here we show the daily submissions from the athletes along with any scores that have flagged. Clicking on a data point brings up a 90d window showing the trends over time.

Athlete Wellness tab

On the athletes wellness tab we show historical trends for all wellbeing metrics tracked via the app.

Wellness Dashboard

Similar to the Athlete Wellness tab, instead displaying visualisations with the team's data averaged on each day. Clicking on a datapoint will allow you to view all results for a given day.

Wellness Report

The wellness report provides a basic table-view of all athlete wellness data reported in a specified time frame. This report is useful for exporting and running your own queries in Excel.
